Tollygunge is a part of South 24 Parganas in Kolkata and is considered among the sought after neighbourhoods of the city. It was developed by Englishman Richard Tolly, after whom the neighbourhood has been christened Tollygunge. The Adi Ganga flows through here, which was once a waterway to East Bengal. The area is surrounded by neighbourhoods such as Golf Gardens, Kudghat, Bansdroni and Ranikuthi.
Despite being a saturated area, Tollygunge has some constructions in the pipeline. Tollygunge enjoys good connectivity to different parts of Kolkata via railway and road networks. It has its own metro railway station, the Mahanayak Uttam Kumar, and tram depot, wherefrom trams to Kalighat depart. The Railway Station is around 2 kilometres from here. The Deshpran Sashmal Road and the NSC Bose Road are the thoroughfares of the area that connect it to Bansdroni, Garia, Narendrapur towards the south and Kalighat, Bhowanipur and Rabindra Sadan towards the north. Both public and private buses serve the area. The Railway Junction is 18.5 kilometres away while the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport is 26 kilometres from here.
There are several private and public schools and colleges in Tollygunge that are ranked among the top ones in Kolkata. Future Foundation School, the Assembly of God Church, Holy Home, Mansur Habibullah Memorial School, G.D. Birla Centre for Education and Gandhi Colony Boys School are some of the reputed schools of the area. Colleges such as Calcutta Institute of Engineering and Management and College are located in the vicinity. Branches of major banks such as State Bank of India, United Bank of India, HDFC Bank and UCO Bank are located here. The MR Bangur Hospital is the closest state owned one. Mall and Charnock City are two shopping areas in the vicinity.
